How powerful can a civilization become? The Kardashev Scale ranks worlds not by money or land — but by the raw energy they can command.

Forget GDP. Forget borders. In 1964, Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev asked a sharper question: how much energy can a civilization harness?
He proposed three levels. A Type I masters all the energy of its planet. A Type II harnesses its entire star. A Type III commands a whole galaxy. Each step up is a jump of ~10 billion× more power.
It started as a way to search for aliens — if a civilization is out there, we might spot it by the sheer energy it leaks into space.

Captures the entire output of its star — the feat of a Dyson Swarm: millions of collectors orbiting the sun like a cloud (Freeman Dyson said a solid shell is impossible — it's a swarm). Roughly a ten-billion-fold leap beyond Type I.

Commands the energy of hundreds of billions of stars — a whole galaxy put to work. So far beyond us it borders on the godlike. The original scale stops here.
Sagan rating ≈ K 3.0 · "a galactic civilization"
Humanity burns through roughly 18.8 terawatts of power — and 87% of it still comes from fossil fuels: oil, coal and gas we dug out of the ground. Michio Kaku's verdict — we're a planet still "burning dead plants." That puts us at about Type 0.73.
Carl Sagan's formula turns the scale into a smooth ruler. Plug in our power — P ≈ 1.88×10¹³ watts — and out comes K ≈ 0.73. Reach 10¹⁶ W and you're a full Type I.
The scale is logarithmic. Reaching Type I means making ~530× more power than we do today. Sagan rated us ~0.7 back in the 1970s — fifty years of growth has only nudged us to ~0.73. We're a cosmic toddler, not a near-graduate.
Physicist Michio Kaku calls the jump from Type 0 to Type I the most dangerous of all — the moment a civilization either grows up… or wipes itself out.
Kardashev built the scale in 1964 around a real radio source, CTA-102, floated as a candidate alien beacon. It turned out to be a natural quasar. The original false alarm.
Astronomers scanned 100,000 galaxies in infrared for the waste heat of Type III empires consuming their galaxies. They found exactly zero. The sky is quiet.
Tabby's Star (KIC 8462857) dimmed by up to 22% and the internet screamed Dyson sphere. Probably just dust… probably. Seven fresh candidates surfaced in 2024.

By Kardashev's original 1964 numbers (Type I = ~4 TW, Earth's 1960s power), humanity has been "Type I" since the 1980s. The "we're not there yet" line uses Sagan's tougher redefinition.
Not intelligence. Not wisdom. Not population or weapons. Just watts. A powerful civilization isn't automatically a wise one — Sagan kept those on separate axes.
